MEET TRINA

9/5/2024

Picture
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work at UCP? Here’s one person’s take.

Meet Trina Bradford (she/her).

Trina joined UCP in 2021 as a Support Specialist in our “Foundations” Department, but was soon promoted to an Assistant Team Leader.

Trina’s team is known as the Willow Team. (Fun fact: both of UCP’s Supported Living Teams are named after trees.)

Trina says her favorite part of the job is “collaborating with customers and coworkers to find solutions. I truly believe in the work we do here. Having a job that feels meaningful is everything. My coworkers are what make it fun!”

Trina currently supports a small caseload of customers, assisting customers with practical, daily living tasks to develop their independence. Trina also supervises two teams of Personal Assistants, who work in the homes of the customers she supports.

Like most folks at UCP, Trina has lots of interests. As she says, when she’s not at UCP, “You might find me at a music festival, camping, snowshoeing on Mt. Hood, getting lost in the Oregon Outback, or at the wildflower extravaganza at Mt. Rainier. I enjoy spending time with friends and family, being outdoors, rock hunting, archaeology, bird watching, and supporting my LGBTQ+ community. I'm always up for new adventures and meeting great people!”
Want to join Trina at UCP? We have a few openings in the same department!

MEET MORE BILL PORTER APPLICANTS

2/11/2022

Picture
As you may have heard, we opened our "Bill Porter Memorial Fund" (BPMF) for 2022 applications on February 1, 2022.

UCP customers, with assistance as needed from UCP staff, are applying to fund for life improvement projects that fall outside of the typical scope of funding.

Here are some examples of how folks used their BPMF funds.

  • Julie’s daughter has cerebral palsy; they used their BPMF funds to purchase a scoot bike. As Julie says, “This purchase would allow our girl to take an active role in family bike rides.”
  • Jane used BPMF funds to pay for twelve sessions of “NeuroMovement” therapy for her son, Luke. Luke first walked on his own at age twelve, and a mere month later, had already figured out how to dance independently.
  • I’Yanna used her BPMF funds to travel (pre-COVID). She was able to reconnect with family and friends.
  • David has autism. He used his BPMF funds for books and at a local community college. His ultimate goal is to finish his secondary education, and work with a technology firm to develop better prosthetic devices.
  • Kim used her BPMF funds to swim at a pool—with the goal of making friends!

MEET ANDREW (AND OTHER BILL PORTER APPLICANTS)

As you may have heard, UCP Oregon opened our “Bill Porter Memorial Fund”(BPMF) for 2022 applications on February 1, 2022.

UCP customers, with assistance as needed from UCP staff, are applying to fund for life improvement projects that fall outside of the typical scope of funding.

We thought it might be fun to share some past examples of how folks used their BPMF funds.

  • Andrew experiences severe anxiety and panic attacks which are triggered by loud noises and environments. He requested noise canceling headphones, which allowed him to cope better with his panic attacks.
  • Gracie was 11 years old when she applied. She liked to swim and wanted to share the experience with her family, so she purchased an annual aquatic center membership. As Gracie’s mom wrote, “It’s been so exciting to finally find a physical activity that the entire family can do together and have fun, too!”
  • Tanya and her teenage daughter applied for equipment that helped with balance and trunk strength.
  • Kelcie used her BPMF funds to purchase a handheld shower head on an adjustable pole so she could bathe as independently as possible.
  • David used his funds to attend a photography class; his goal was to learn to take photos of his family and friends.

UCP Receives a Grant, and Shares the Love

12/15/2021

It's rainy and cold here in Oregon, but we're excited because we have some great news for you!

UCP Oregon was awarded a grant from the Oregon Department of Human Services, which we're using to highlight and celebrate the hard work of our Direct Support Professionals.

We created a "Share the Love" story project, where our direct support staff could share stories about their work life--the fun stuff, the hard stuff, and even the funny parts. Every person who submitted a story was awarded a $100 Visa gift card.

We received so many fabulous stories. We'll be sharing several of them here (see the link below) and on Facebook over the next few weeks, so make sure to check back in.

PS: Thank you so much to everyone who submitted a story!

*DSP's are employees who provide direct support to customers, such as Personal Assistants, Support Specialists, Support Coordinators, Personal Coordinators, Assistant Team Leaders, Substitute Support Professionals, Children’s Support Professionals, Job Coaches, and Employment Specialists.

Thanks, Volume 2

We’d like to share some more stories from the storm.

One of UCP Oregon’s Supported Living Team Leaders, Codi Parmelee, did fantastic work, driving staff to and from shifts. Thanks, Codi!

A Personal Agent from UCP’s Brokerage, Jeff Gilbert, braved the storm with our technology consultant, Jeff Couttouw, to get our servers up, with assistance from the Brokerage Director, Sarah Noack. Thanks, guys!

And so many other folks worked extra hours and dealt with treacherous driving conditions. We are so grateful for every one of you. Thank you!

Have You Seen it?

You probably already know all about  Supported Living Department, which assists folks to live in their own homes.

What you might not know is that this department has its own name: "UCP Foundations."

And, now, it has its own logo, too! Check it out!

Meet Some of the First Bill Porter Fund Recipients

12/22/2019

Picture
UCP Oregon launched the Bill Porter Memorial Fund in 2018 in an effort to remove barriers and support meaningful lives for people experiencing disabilities.

In 2019, the Fund accepted its first round of applicants.

Here are some of their stories... more stories to come soon!

  • Julie’s two-year old daughter has cerebral palsy; she’ll be using BPMF funds to purchase a scoot bike. As Julie says, “This style of balance bike helps children learn how to balance, a skill which can present an extra challenge to children with cerebral palsy. This purchase would allow our girl to take an active role in family bike rides.”
  • Jane is using BPMF funds to pay for twelve sessions of “NeuroMovement” therapy for her son, Luke. Luke first walked on his own at age twelve, and a mere month later, had already figured out how to dance independently. Luke recently became one of three teens with exceptional disabilities to be hired at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
  • I’Yanna is using her BPMF funds to travel, specifically to reconnect with family and friends who reside in Los Angeles, California. Some of them she’s never even been able to meet!
  • Andrew experiences severe anxiety and panic attacks which are triggered by loud noises and environments. He requested noise canceling headphones, which will allow him to cope better with his panic attacks and to engage in community activities that he typically has to remove himself from.
  • David has autism. He is using his BPMF funds for books and tuition for up to eight credit hours at a local community college. His ultimate goal is to finish his secondary education, and work with a technology firm to develop better prosthetic devices.
