In Loving Memory of Molly Holsapple

10/28/2025

Picture

We’re deeply saddened to share that our long-time board member, colleague, and friend Molly Holsapple passed away peacefully last week.

Molly was a tireless advocate, community leader, and friend to so many.

For more than forty years, Molly helped shape Oregon’s disability services system—creating new opportunities, expanding inclusion, and helping thousands of Oregonians with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) live fuller, more self-directed lives.

Molly’s impact at UCP Oregon and across the state can’t be overstated. Her leadership, warmth, humor, and fierce commitment to doing what was right continue to inspire us every day.

UCP Oregon’s Executive Director, Ann Coffey, worked closely with Molly for many years—and was grateful to call her a friend.

Read Ann’s letter celebrating Molly’s extraordinary life and legacy below.

Did You Know?

10/21/2025

Did you know that UCP Oregon is part of a powerful national network of United Cerebral Palsy affiliates driving change across the country?

Recently, the national UCP organization (United Cerebral Palsy) shared some powerful statistics about their work, and the work of all the affiliates over a 2024-2025 fiscal year.

  • Advocacy in Action: UCP leadership traveled more than 381,000 miles this year, meeting with lawmakers across the nation and releasing the Case for Inclusion 2025 Policy Blueprint alongside ANCOR to strengthen the direct support workforce and protect Medicaid.
  • Empowering Independence: The Elsie S. Bellows Fund distributed $381,000 through UCP affiliates, funding essential assistive technology such as wheelchairs, ramps, and communication devices.
  • Expanding Knowledge: The UCP Research Council hosted its Professional Learning Series for clinicians, advanced early detection and intervention training for cerebral palsy, and supported bold new ideas through its grant program.
  • Unmatched Reach: Across the UCP network, affiliates provided more than 73 million hours of service to 200,000 individuals and families, including advocacy, therapy, early learning, job coaching, residential programs, and more.

Disability Pride Month, 2025: From the Desk of Ann

7/5/2025

Picture
July is Disability Pride Month—a time to celebrate disability as identity, culture, and community.

But this year, it also arrives in the shadow of uncertainty. With major cuts to Medicaid recently signed into law, many in the disability community are feeling the weight of what might come next.

That’s why this month matters more than ever.

As UCP Oregon's Executive Director, Ann Coffey, writes, “Pride isn’t about ignoring hard truths. It’s about embracing the whole story—joy and pain, struggle and strength—and finding ways to move forward, together.”

Read Ann’s full message here.

We’re also taking time this month to honor the Disability Pride Flag, a powerful symbol of visibility, identity, and resistance. Did you know it was redesigned in 2021 to be more accessible for people with visual sensitivities?

Here’s what each part of the flag represents:
  • Black background: Mourning and rage for victims of ableist violence and abuse.
  • Red stripe: Physical disabilities.
  • Gold stripe: Neurodivergence.
  • White stripe: Invisible or undiagnosed disabilities.
  • Blue stripe: Psychiatric disabilities.
  • Green stripe: Sensory disabilities, including blindness and deafness.

You can learn more about the flag’s redesign here.

Whether you’re celebrating, grieving, or somewhere in between—we’re glad you’re here.

Make a Call Today to Protect Medicaid

3/5/2025

Picture
UCP Oregon Community,

As many of you know, UCP Oregon is currently wading through tides of information related to the President’s recent Executive Orders.

One Executive Order relates to Medicaid.

As a non-profit, it is not UCP Oregon’s role to represent political opinions. Rather, our role is to focus on legislation and the potential impact to our mission, values and the communities we serve.

However, these Executive Orders, if implemented, will have a large impact on the entire UCP Oregon Community.

Medicaid provides essential healthcare for millions of people, including children, seniors, and people with disabilities.

Right now, Medicaid is at risk, and we need your help to protect it. Luckily, a simple voicemail can make a difference!

Call 1-866-426-2631 to be connected to your members of Congress. It only takes a minute.

NOTES:
  • If you are an employee of UCP Oregon, please make this call as an individual, not as a representative of the organization. You can say you work in the disability community but should not claim to speak on behalf of UCP Oregon.
  • If you or a loved one use Medicaid, you are encouraged to share your personal experience—real stories have a big impact!
  • Pro Tip: Does the thought of talking to a Congressional office make you nervous? UCP's Marketing Coordinator (Corrie Hausman) has a tip. She says, "If you call the number after 5pm PST, you're almost guaranteed to hit voicemail instead of a human being. I just called, and it was super easy."

Every call helps show that Medicaid is vital to our community. Thank you for taking action!

Sincerely,

Ann Coffey
Executive Director
UCP Oregon

how it works:

  1. Dial 866-426-2631.
  2. Enter your ZIP code when prompted.
  3. You’ll be connected to your Representative or Senator’s office.
  4. If desired, you can then use this simple script:

Hi, my name is [Your Name], and I live in [Your City and ZIP Code].

I’m calling to ask you to protect Medicaid. Medicaid is critical for people with disabilities, families, and seniors. Medicaid saves lives.

Please oppose any cuts or changes to Medicaid. Thank you!

Dear UCP Oregon Community,

What a year! There has been so much growth and change. It’s been thrilling, challenging, interesting, and engaging, and I am so grateful that we were together. High fives all around!

When you have time, please take a moment to reflect. What have we shared? What have we learned? How will we show up to provide excellent supports to customers? How will we support one another?

Thank you again for all that you do.

Wishing you a wonderful holiday season, and a new year filled with health, hope, and happiness.

HAPPY 25TH ANNIVERSARY TO THE OLMSTEAD DECISION!

6/22/2024

Picture

FROM THE DESK OF ANN COFFEY:
HAPPY 25TH ANNIVERSARY TO THE OLMSTEAD DECISION!

Today is a special day for everyone who experiences or cares about people who experience intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (I/DD).

It’s the 25th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in a case called Olmstead v. L.C.

On June 22, 1999, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the unjustified segregation of people with disabilities is a form of unlawful discrimination under the ADA. This landmark decision requires states to provide services in the most integrated settings, promoting community participation for all.

UCP Oregon also celebrates our involvement in the historic Lane v. Brown case, filed in 2012. The lawsuit challenged Oregon's use of segregated, sheltered workshops that paid sub-minimum wages to people who experience I/DD.

The Lane v. Brown case was settled in 2015, and led to significant changes, including the closure of all sheltered workshops in Oregon by 2020 and the provision of competitive, integrated employment opportunities for thousands of individuals.

Cheers to 25 years of progress!

Do you know someone who might be a great fit for UCP's Board of Directors? If so, we're excited to hear from you!

But, first, a bit more information.

UCP's Board of Directors is made up of a dedicated group of individuals. Some board members use UCP's services or are parents of children who use UCP's services. Many board members are leaders in the business and non-profit community.

We are looking for individuals who:

  • Have a strong commitment to UCP's mission and values.
  • Bring diverse perspectives and expertise.
  • Possessexperiences and skills in areas such as finance, fundraising, marketing, law, healthcare, or community advocacy.
