Dear UCP Community,

We wish to inform you that UCP Oregon’s Family Support Director, Katherine Ball, has moved on to pursue new opportunities.

We appreciate her years of service and wish her well in her future endeavors. Katherine’s gifts were supporting families who were navigating new diagnoses, and providing information and referrals on a vast array of topics.

UCP Oregon will be recruiting to fill the Family Support Director position soon. In the meantime:
  • Please direct general Family Support questions to Ann Coffey, UCP Oregon’s Executive Director.
  • To receive a “Newly Diagnosed” Packet, please contact Mackenzie Snell.
  • For Zetosch Grant inquiries, please contact Anna Williams.
  • Several of UCP Oregon’s events will be affected including “Gimme A Break” (UCP’s Family Support Group); the Walk, Roll ‘n’ Run; and Family Support Workshops. Stay tuned!

This will be a big transition for all of us. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me.

Sincerely,

Ann Coffey,
Executive Director
UCP Oregon

YAY FOR KELLY!

4/29/2024

Picture
Congratulations to Kelly Castagnola!

Many of you know Kelly. Kelly has worked for UCP Oregon for almost 23 years, most recently as UCP’s “Training and Supports Manager.” In that position, she supervised UCP’s employee training program and UCP’s pool of Substitute Support Specialists.

But we’re pleased to report that Kelly recently accepted a new position at UCP—that of “Employee Engagement and Organizational Development Coordinator.”

In her new position, Kelly will be able to focus 100% on employee learning, as well as employee development, retention and engagement activities. Woo hoo!

Kelly says, “I’m looking forward to making a positive impact on all UCP teams by enhancing our onboarding and ongoing learning opportunities, as well as enriching the overall employee experience and improving retention.”

PS: For those of you who are wondering, today we began to recruit internally for a "Direct Support and Quality Assurance Manager"--a new position that includes many of Kelly's old duties.

MEET BETHANY

We are incredibly pleased to introduce you to one of UCP Oregon's newest Board members, Bethany M. Sloane, PT, DPT, PCS, PhD(c).

Bethany joined our Board earlier this year.

Bethany has worked as a pediatric physical therapist since 2009. She currently works at the Child Development & Rehabilitation Center at Oregon Health & Science University, where she specializes in durable medical equipment prescription and assistive technology. She conducts research involving powered mobility interventions and the use of assistive technology, in collaboration with caregivers/parents and young children with a diagnosis of cerebral palsy.

Bethany is also the co-director of Go Baby Go Oregon, a community-based outreach program that adapts pediatric equipment for children to increase their mobility and participation in play, fun, and socialization.

Before joining UCP’s Board, Bethany was a familiar face at UCP Oregon’s Family Support Conference, serving as a presenter and assisting with planning. Bethany has also attended UCP Oregon’s Walk, Roll ’n’ Run event. She is excited to be involved in future UCP events.

BON VOYAGE TO ESTHER AND JANET

1/2/2024

Picture
Many of you know UCP's fantastic Finance Director, Esther Large, and her fearless sidekick, Janet Fromdahl.

On January 2, 2024, after 20+ and 10+ years (respectively), Esther and Janet are retiring.

FROM THE DESK OF ANN COFFEY,
UCP OREGON'S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

BON VOYAGE TO ESTHER HOLLIDAY (FORMER FINANCE DIRECTOR)

Esther and I have worked closely together for over 20 years. She began at UCP back when we were a small agency with only $2.3 million in annual revenue. Today, UCP Oregon has approximately $12 million in annual revenue. What a ride it's been!

I remember sitting down with Esther for one of our first budgeting cycles together. This was in the days of pencils and paper and solar-powered calculators. Her support and insight were invaluable then, and only continued to grow over the next 20 years.

I have learned so much from her.

I have never known an individual with such an outstanding work ethic. She even roped her mom, son, and husband into volunteering for UCP.

Thank you, Esther. I will miss our work together immensely.

BON VOYAGE TO JANET FROMDAHL (FORMER PAYROLL/ACCOUNTS PAYABLE CLERK)

If you haven't met or interacted with Janet, she is the epitome of customer service at its best. She patiently assisted all of us in so many ways. No matter the challenge, she moved through it with patience, understanding, and a smile. I have always trusted her implicitly.

Thank you, Janet! You will be missed.

Sincerely, Ann Coffey
Executive Director, UCP Oregon

Picture
Dear UCP Community,

It’s December. Brrr!

This month, as the holidays arrive, the UCP Oregon community is celebrating in many ways. Some of us are sharing culture and traditions with family and friends. Others are engaged in spiritual practices, or pausing for a mindful moment. Others may be struggling with grief or other challenges. And many of us are sharing our resources with others in need.

Wherever you find yourself this season, know that UCP Oregon is holding you in our hearts.

As 2023 draws to a close, we’d also like to express our gratitude to the entire UCP Oregon community. Our customers. Our employees. The families and caregivers. Our dedicated volunteers, including our Board of Directors, task force members, and workgroup participants. And many more. We couldn’t do it without you!

Wishing you a joyful holiday season, and a new year filled with health, hope and happiness.

Sincerely,

Ann Coffey
Executive Director
UCP Oregon

We are excited to share UCP Oregon’s newest Annual Report, which covers the 2020-2021 fiscal year.

The theme of this report is “Change.”

As our Executive Director, Ann Coffey, states in the report, “There has been so much change... But, through it all, the UCP community stood strong and resilient. We stood together. We sought new ways to complete our work. We found new ways to connect. We discovered new ways to find balance and purpose.”

A gigantic thank you to everyone who contributed, as a writer, photographer, and/or editor!

YEAR-END UPDATE, FROM THE DESK OF SUZANNAH NEWMAN

2/4/2023

Picture
From the Desk of Suzannah Newman, Human Resources Director

2022 was a busy year for UCP’s Human Resources Department. One of our main focuses was updating and improving UCP’s compensation structure.

In late 2021, we began working with a new compensation consultant. The consultant conducted an Internal Equity Study, using specific factors that are defined in the Oregon Pay Equity Act.

The Oregon Pay Equity Act requires employers to ensure that they are providing equitable pay for comparable jobs using five characteristics: job knowledge, skill, effort, responsibility and working conditions. Going forward, UCP’s compensation structure will be evaluated every third year based on compliance with Oregon Pay Equity. The consultant also conducted a market survey of each job at UCP.

All of this was essential work, necessary to attract qualified and experienced candidates, retain talented employees, and create an environment that fosters teamwork, recognizes achievement, and aligns with UCP’s organizational commitments and service-level goals.

We also continued to engage in a wide range of external advocacy activities, lobbying for increased funding to sustain our efforts to provide fair and equitable compensation for our employees.

YEAR-END UPDATE, FROM THE DESK OF JOHN GOFF

YEAR-END UPDATE, FROM THE DESK OF JOHN GOFF, COMMUNITY SERVICES DIRECTOR

Hello, UCP Family!

It is always an honor to share the successes and stories of the Community Services (CS) Department, but not without first recognizing the collective energy of all UCP customers, employees, Board members, and partners. When I think of the past year, I am reminded of the familiar phrase that it truly “Takes a Village,” and I must say that I am grateful to have been a part of this one for close to 10 years!

So, what of the year 2022? I wish I had space to list every situation and scenario navigated, but I can say with certainty and admiration that everyone in the department showed up in a very big way to support one another.

In no order of priority, the CS Department:
  • Worked with incredibly flexible customers to evaluate safety concerns while reentering the community as businesses began to open their doors again.
  • Supported customer education and a thoughtful response to the Omicron and variant surges
  • Assisted with scheduling vaccines for customers in the ever-changing variant landscape
  • Supported one another like family following the loss of loved ones
  • Hired, trained and onboarded a ton of positions, including new managers who have all been rocking their various roles and responsibilities
  • Customers went back to work or started new jobs
  • Celebrated many customer successes including one individual who now creates and monitors his own household budget
  • Customers returned to their Special Olympic teams to resume training
  • Worked together to identify department strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities
  • Completed and participated in agency-wide Diversity, Equity and Inclusion trainings
  • Consistently demonstrated their commitment to CS customers and each other

I am very proud of all the accomplishments and work from the Community Services Department, and I look forward to another great year in 2023 filled with opportunity, continued advocacy, and growth.

ANNOUNCING UCP'S NEW Employment Services Director

1/15/2023

Picture
We are pleased to announce that Nicole Vivanco has been promoted to the position of Employment Services Director, which oversees UCP's Supported Employment Department.

Prior to this advancement, Nicole was acting as the Employment Services Manager. Nicole took on the Manager position during a very difficult time in the early months of the pandemic.

Thanks to Nicole’s dedication, the Employment Solutions team is thriving, with customers working across the Portland area. Nicole participated in agency-wide strategic planning and implementation. She also fostered productive collaboration with community partners such as mental health and developmental disabilities agencies, area Brokerages, Vocational Rehabilitation, Oregon Commission for the Blind, families, advocates, Board members, etc.

Nicole brings 9 years of experience in the field of supported employment.

Nicole says, “I am so happy to accept this new role within our department, and I am excited to continue to support our customers, employers, and the employment professionals at UCP to find success and meet their career goals.”

She adds, “I’d like to thank our community partners for their collaboration and support. Seeing a person shine—in a job that is a great match for them and their employer—is the biggest motivator for me. Supported employment is so powerful for everyone involved.”

Thank you, Nicole, for everything you’ve done and continue to do. We are excited to begin this new chapter with you.
